AbstractFederal government published the occurrence of an exponential increase of the incidence of dengue in 2010. The government has identified that in epidemiological weeks 1-9 Mato Grosso do Sul State was responsible by a variation of 1100.99% in incidence of dengue in comparison with other states between 2009 and 2010. This paper investigates if this higher rate of incidence of dengue in Campo Grande is related to significant environmental oscillations. Therefore, it was compared environmental disparities between 2009 and 2010, through environmental data from Land Remote Sensing Satellite (Landsat), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), Terra and Aqua satellites. The Landsat 5 images (Thematic Mapper) were used to classify the areas with vegetation and with water-covered in the urban perimeter. The monthly mean surface temperatures acquired were taken from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MOD11 product aboard of Terra and Aqua. The average monthly rainfall was obtained through the product from the TRMM (3B43). The analysis of satellite data allowed to observe the environmental changes that check the same period between 2009 and 2010 provided an environment suitable for the growing population of Aedes aegypti and development of the dengue virus. Thus, the use of remote sensing contributes to the prevention of dengue.
